Tagetes oil is extracted from leaves, stems, stalks and flowers of Tagetes erecta by steam distillation process using water. It is commonly called as Gada, Genda, Marigold, Mexican marigold, Aztec marigold, American marigold or big marigold. Tagetes is a subtropical annual plant known for its colorful flower and smell. October to November is the perfect time for planting in Bangladesh. The flowers bloom from November to February. About one kilo of tagetes oil is produced from about seven hundred kilos of stems, leaves and flower.

Tagetes essential oil has a strong, warm, sweet-herbaceous, distinctive pungent aroma with a very powerful fruity undertone. Despite its unusual pungency, tagetes essential oil is used extensively in aromatherapy and natural perfumery; although in minimal amounts. Tagetes essential oil should be diluted to a maximum of 0.01% for dermal applications to avoid risk of phototoxic reaction.
